But only because BMW stands for Bob Marley and The Wailers…” In spite of Mr. Marley’s pretty cool assertion, BMW actually stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke or Bavarian Motor Works as it translates to in English. BMW started business in Bavaria, Germany in 1916 as an aircraft engine producer. In 1923, they began building motorcycles. It wasn’t until 1928, that BMW actually produced its first car. BMW manufactures a number of different models of cars, including BMW Hybrid Models

- The BMW 303 was also the company’s first 6 cylinder vehicle.
- The first BMW ‘series’ was the 5-series. The first car with the ‘series’ tag was the E12. This was in 1972.
- The first BMW to sell over 1 million worldwide was also the first 3 series, the E21. It was released in 1975 through 1983.
- The first automobile that BMW produced in 1928 was the BMW Dixi (it was also a licensed Austin Seven).
